Around the Castle

Originally built in the commune of Noyal-sur-Vilaine, the Châteaugiron castle only acquired its full independence in the 12th century when the town around the castle began to develop. As you search for this cache, you will get a chance to explore this town around the castle. On your marks!

Departure

You can park at the Châteaugiron tourist information center at 48°02.920N 001°30.126W. Then head towards the castle, cross the bridge and stop at 48°02.924N 001°30.150W where you'll start your treasure hunt.

The Cache

You are facing the primary residence. On your right lies the dungeon and on your left, the Clock Tower.

1st Riddle

Count the number of arrow loops in the Clock Tower. This number is "A."

Hint: An arrow loop (or arrow slit or balistraria)is a thin vertical aperture in a fortification through which an archer can launch arrows largely free from personal danger (source : Wikipedia).

Once you have the number for A, return back, walk past the Tourist Office, then to the right under the hall. Go down Rue de la Madeleine, and take Rue de l'Yaigne to the courtyard with its beautiful French-style garden.

2nd Riddle

Go to 48°02.933N 001°30.208W

In what year was the North wing (address: 5 bis) restored? This number will be BCDE (for example: "1986" B=1, D=9, C=8, E=6).

Continue along your way, passing by "the dogs and the child," and walk along the castle in the grass. Take a little breather on the bench facing the Dungeon.

The Treasure

Go to: N 48° 02,93 A+2  W 001° 3C,1 E-1 A-E. If you took a breather on the bench facing the dungeon, the treasure should be at the tips of your fingers if you stretch your arms.

Once you find it, don't forget to sign the visitor book and put the treasure back in its hiding place for the next visitors!

To leave, take the staircase located 10 meters to your left and there you are.
