Essé - La Roche aux Fées

Legend has it that this monument was built by fairies who carried the rocks to the site in their aprons. They say that if you try to count the rocks, you never get the same number twice - the fairies like to play tricks on visitors, constantly moving the boulders around when they aren't paying attention. But what if they did the same thing with the cache? On your marks!

The Site

The megalithic monument called the Roche aux Fées is an Angevin dolmen with portico (a specific dolmen form) located some 3 km from the town of Essé. It comprises 41 (or 42, or 40, depending on the fairies) blocks of purple-tinged schist ranging from 5 to as much as 40 metric tons in weight. The monument opens to the southeast with a beautiful trilithic portico that has been masterfully squared off.

The stones of the Roche aux Fées were most likely sourced from the Butte des Piqueliers in Brittany's Theil forest, located 4 km south of Essé. It must have taken a serious effort with a significant workforce to transport these blocks all the way to the site.

A little fairy hint:

"Watch out for cherries in high season - they'll stain your knees"
